A Space to Belong: New Free Youth Club for Autistic Young People in Salford

If your child has ever struggled to find a space where they feel completely at ease, where there’s no need to mask, no pressure to explain, and no expectations to “fit in” – you’re not alone. Many autistic young people long for a place where they can simply be themselves. That’s exactly what the new Autism-Friendly Youth Club in Salford offers: a calm, welcoming environment where individuality is celebrated, and every young person is free to choose how they take part, whether that means joining activities, relaxing with peers, or enjoying quiet time. Because with the right support and setting, autistic young people don’t just fit in – they flourish.

Navigating the teenage years can be challenging for any young person – but for those who are autistic, the social world can often feel overwhelming, unpredictable, or simply exhausting.

That’s why I AM, a leading autism charity based in Greater Manchester, has launched a brand-new Youth Club for autistic young people aged 10-18 in Salford – in partnership with Salford City Council. And the best part? It’s completely free for families living in the area.

A Place to Feel Safe, Seen, and Supported

Too often, autistic young people miss out on youth groups and extracurricular activities – not because they don’t want to connect, but because many spaces aren’t set up to support their unique ways of communicating, relaxing, or engaging.

The Salford Autism-Friendly Youth Club flips that narrative.

Held every other Monday at Deans Youth Centre, this inclusive club offers a warm, relaxed environment where choice, comfort, and respect come first. Whether your child wants to bake, create, play pool, enjoy video games, or simply sit and observe – they’ll be welcomed just as they are.

“This isn’t about forcing social interaction,” says Nick Foster, CEO of I AM. “It’s about creating a safe, supportive environment – a space where young people can simply be, feel they belong, and have the freedom to grow. Most importantly, it’s a place where they’re accepted exactly as they are, with the time and space to engage in their own way, at their own pace.”

Activities That Encourage Expression Without Pressure

Each session is thoughtfully designed to offer low-pressure, high-enjoyment activities, including:

  • Arts & Crafts – for creative expression at their own pace
  • Baking – hands-on fun with delicious rewards
  • Pool – friendly, quiet competition
  • Gaming & Movie Nights – great for winding down together
  • Outdoor Area with a Lake – perfect for a breather or a stroll
  • Chat Spaces & Chill Zones – connect if you want to, relax if you don’t

Everything is underpinned by a gentle, person-centred approach, making the club ideal for young people who may be socially anxious, newly diagnosed, or simply looking for their tribe.

Why This Matters

We know that autistic young people often face isolation, particularly during life transitions like finishing school. Social opportunities can dwindle, confidence can dip, and mental wellbeing may be impacted.

But clubs like this provide more than just entertainment – they offer a lifeline to friendship, confidence-building, and connection. They also give parents and carers peace of mind, knowing their child is in a safe, understanding environment.
