Autistic Lives on the Line: Draconian PIP Overhaul Threatens £4,500 Lifeline for 800,000

Did you see that up to 800,000 disabled people could be told they no longer qualify for Personal Independence Payments (PIP) by 2026? 😡 And among the hardest hit? Autistic people - many of whom rely on that extra £4,500 a year to cover sensory aids, specialist therapies, and the unseen costs of navigating a world that wasn’t built for them.

By changing the daily living assessment so you now have to score 4 points in one activity (instead of 8 across several), the government is effectively deciding that if you can manage some tasks on your own, you’re not “disabled enough” to need support. But what about the meltdowns, the executive-function paralysis, the sensory overwhelm that can make a “simple” trip to the supermarket feel like climbing Everest? 🏔️

They call it “tightening the criteria,” but let’s call it what it really is: a draconian cut that ignores the reality of autism. ❌ This isn’t about encouraging employment or reducing bureaucracy - it’s about pushing autistic people further into poverty, into isolation, into the shadows. And all while promising a £1 billion “employment fund” that won’t even kick in until 2026-27. How many of us will fall through the cracks before then?

We need to ask our MPs: Why are you gambling with people’s lives? Why is living with autism treated as a luxury, rather than the reality for hundreds of thousands? Glad to see Tom Morrison is concerned about cuts ro benefits!

Don’t ever stop help for autistic people!!! We will always need support and assistance. Shame on the government

Thank you.....this is such an important issue and we need reassurance....... something we can't get if our government are so ignorant of facts and so determined to put financial issues above caring.

🚨 PIP Overhaul Incoming: What Happens When Your Support Is Reduced to Tick-Boxes? 🚨

Next year, the DWP plans to rip apart the PIP evidence form and rebuild it as a strict, point-scoring machine - introducing minimum thresholds on daily-living tasks and ramping up face-to-face assessments. On paper, it’s about “fairness” and “restoring trust,” but for autistic people whose challenges often centre on communication, sensory overwhelm and social interaction, this could be the difference between financial stability and crisis support being yanked away. 😡

Imagine:

📌 Scoring zero because you learnt to cook years ago, yet still need support with meal-time routines when sensory overload kicks in.

📌 Being forced into anxiety-fuelled face-to-face assessments that misunderstand masking and meltdown cycles.

📌 Watching your “lived experience” tokenism brief us on “expert panels” while actual autistic voices remain unseen.

This isn’t reform - it’s a risk that 3.7 million Brits could lose crucial help simply because their needs don’t fit tidy descriptors. When Sir Stephen Timms promises a “wider review” of PIP indicators, we need real co-production, not consultation lip-service.
