"Antidepressants are like alcohol or cannabis," says Joanna Moncrieff, a British psychiatrist and controversial voice in the research of depression.

Her eye-opening claim is shaking up the foundation of psychiatric treatment, revealing that antidepressants might be a temporary fix, not the cure we've been led to believe!

In her explosive @Channel 4 interview, Moncrieff argues:

Antidepressants don’t heal - they numb emotions and give people false hope.

There’s NO proof that depression is caused by a biological chemical imbalance.

Antidepressants are mind-altering substances, much like alcohol or cannabis.

🤔 So, what’s really behind the mental health crisis? Could it be society’s pressures, not our brains, that are making us feel this way?

I see them as a buoyancy aid. Keep my head above water while I try to make changes to help long term. They save lives.

They are simply a tool in the battle for good wellbeing, enabling people to find support and stratergies. I don’t know anyone that sees them as a quick fix or a long term solution. They are increasingly difficult to access and the last thing we need is for this essential lifeline to be stigmatised further.

📢 SEND Reform on the Horizon - What Does It Mean for Our Community?

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has announced plans to reform the SEND system, including reducing profits for private special schools and increasing mainstream inclusion.

She says too many children are being sent far from home to costly private settings, and that the system isn’t delivering the outcomes our children deserve. A full reform package is expected in June.

While we welcome any focus on better outcomes, we know families are understandably concerned. Mainstream inclusion can work when properly resourced - but for many children, specialist settings are not a luxury, they are a necessity.

Would better local mainstream support have made a difference?

There are so many things that need to be done for this to actually work & it’s going to take alot of resources initially to make the change & may not save money in the long-term either because every school would have to be given the resources to be able to cater for more SEND kids. I agree that there needs to be more supported integration opportunities for yp with SEND who want to be in mainstream but need support to do this. But I think a hybrid model is what is needed as one size definitely does not fit all! Should be more resources in ALL mainstream schools, more resource bases in mainstream schools with space & enough specialist schools for those who can’t cope in a mainstream environment even with support. Problem is mainstream schools don’t have enough quiet & breakout space for SEND kids or the OT etc equipment needed (often none), let alone room for a separate resource base. They’ll also need alot more support staff & the appropriate number of TAs in every classroom for the number & needs of SEND children & others. On top of that there needs to be full & proper SEND training for ALL staff including dinner staff, cleaners, caretakers, sports coaches & governors. And everyone from the top down has to be encouraged to have a genuine commitment to access & inclusion. With the growing number of children & yp being diagnosed, & the 10+years of under-investment, it will take alot of investment to actually sort out the emergency situation in education. If the government are serious about investing growth an expansion programme for mainstream schools would help with this but that’s a medium-term project & lots of schools are still struggling with paying of the PFI deals. If it’s just a cost-cutting exercise they risk making things worse not better!

Whilst it is a good idea, in practise, it won't work as there are not enough tas and 121 support staff in schools to be able to make this viable.
