London Marathon: Running For I AM

We have been lucky enough to secure 3 places in this year’s virtual TCS London Marathon to be held on Sunday 2nd October 2022.

Among the Team I AM pacemakers this year and taking up the challenge of conquering the world’s greatest marathon and 26.2 miles are Claire Smith,  a trustee on the I AM board, Sarah Smith, and Heather Sargeant.

Claire spoke to us about why she took on the challenge:

I am so lucky to be on the Board of an impressive charity I AM – Celebrating Autism in Greater Manchester. The team are truly amazing and daily we change lives building confidence, creating social connections and supporting young people and adults in developing their life skills. To enable this amazing team to continue this essential service Sarah Elise, Heather Sargeant and and myself are walking the Virtual London Marathon on the 2nd October. We need your support to raise funds !!!

Heather took a break from training to answer some questions about why she is running for I AM

You’re running the London Marathon in October 2022. What made you decide to go for it?

My friend was doing it and looking for some others to join her. I thought I could give it a go and support her at the same time.

Why are you running for I AM?

I want to support the charity as it provides much needed support for autistic young people and adults. It also helps to raise awareness and start more conversations about autism and I think that’s a really positive thing.

Tell us about your fundraising targets

I know it is a really tough time at the moment and so I am very grateful for all the support I have received whether it is encouragement, advice or financial; support. I was hoping to raise around £250 and I think I will meet that goal.

How has your training plan gone so far?

I am so grateful to be walking with other people as the training has gone the best when I am having a good old chat. I have done several longer walks but none at the marathon distance – hopefully my legs are prepared for that!

What are you most excited about?

Finishing the distance and hopefully some great views in the Peak District.

Any advice for people looking to run a marathon in the future?

I’m in awe of all marathon-ers – walking or running! It is no mean feat to stay on your feet, moving, for such a long time. But it is great to get out of your comfort zone and to push yourself a bit further.
