We’re a UK registered charity working with and supporting a wide range of people, aged 10 years and upwards, who have a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Condition (which can also be called Asperger Syndrome, High Functioning Autism or Autistic Spectrum Disorder) as well as their families, guardians and carers in Greater Manchester.
Our Mission
We exist to support, empower, and celebrate autistic people. Our aim is to be the region’s leading developer and provider of autism support services – the first point of contact for anyone navigating an autism diagnosis in Greater Manchester. More than a provider, we strive to be an exemplar, shaping best practice and championing neurodiversity.
Our Story So Far
Originally founded as the Autistic Society of Greater Manchester Area (ASGMA), our journey began as a small family-led support group offering guidance to parents and children. Over time, we evolved into a city-wide charity dedicated to making life better for autistic people.
In March 2004, we relocated from Eccles to our current home in Stretford, enabling us to grow our services, reach more people, and build stronger community partnerships.
Today, we continue that legacy under the name I AM – proudly celebrating every aspect of autism.
What We Do
At I AM, support is never one-size-fits-all. Every person and family is unique – and so are our services:
1-to-1 Coaching & Life Support
We work directly with individuals on the autism spectrum to build skills in independent living, health and wellbeing, emotional regulation, and daily life navigation. Whether it’s learning how to travel independently, manage anxiety, or build confidence, our support is tailored and compassionate.
Group Work & Social Activities
Autism can often bring social isolation – we’re here to change that. We run regular group activities, clubs, and peer-based programmes to help people connect, grow friendships, and feel a genuine sense of belonging.
Mental & Physical Wellbeing
Our services actively support both mental health and physical wellness, recognising the full spectrum of challenges autistic individuals may face. We work to empower every participant to thrive not just survive.
Family & Carer Support
We’re here for parents, carers, and guardians too. Our monthly support groups, as well as phone and email helplines, provide a safe space to share, learn, and feel heard. We know the journey can be overwhelming – you’re not alone.
Our People
Our leadership includes members with lived experience, alongside professionals with deep expertise in autism. This unique blend ensures that our services remain personal, practical, and purposeful.
Why We’re Called “I AM”
The name I AM is a declaration. It’s a statement of identity, pride, and self-worth. It says:
“I AM autistic.”
“I AM not defined by a label.”
“I AM worthy of understanding, opportunity, and joy.”
If you or someone you care about is navigating life on the spectrum, I AM is here for you – with experience, empathy, and unwavering commitment.
Let’s celebrate autism. Let’s build brighter, more inclusive futures. Together.
