From 3–8 February 2025, The Garrick Ensemble (a talented company of 18–30 year old aspiring actors) will bring Mark Haddon’s award-winning novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time to life. Adapted by Simon Stephens and directed by Joseph Meighan, this compelling story follows fifteen-year-old Christopher on a journey to unravel the mysterious death of his neighbour’s dog.
The play (and the original novel) focuses on Christopher, a teenage protagonist who processes the world in a way that strongly suggests he is on the autism spectrum. While author Mark Haddon never explicitly labels Christopher as autistic, his traits – such as sensory sensitivities, intense logical thinking, and challenges navigating social situations – are consistent with those often associated with autism.
Because of Christopher’s unique perspective and experiences, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is widely regarded as a story that explores neurodiversity. It offers valuable insights into how someone who thinks and perceives differently can still demonstrate courage, empathy, and resilience.
