An uplifting, touching and occasionally very funny play that will leave audiences inspired.

From 3–8 February 2025, The Garrick Ensemble (a talented company of 18–30 year old aspiring actors) will bring Mark Haddon’s award-winning novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time to life. Adapted by Simon Stephens and directed by Joseph Meighan, this compelling story follows fifteen-year-old Christopher on a journey to unravel the mysterious death of his neighbour’s dog.

The play (and the original novel) focuses on Christopher, a teenage protagonist who processes the world in a way that strongly suggests he is on the autism spectrum. While author Mark Haddon never explicitly labels Christopher as autistic, his traits – such as sensory sensitivities, intense logical thinking, and challenges navigating social situations – are consistent with those often associated with autism.

Because of Christopher’s unique perspective and experiences, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is widely regarded as a story that explores neurodiversity. It offers valuable insights into how someone who thinks and perceives differently can still demonstrate courage, empathy, and resilience. This has made the play (and novel) a touchstone for conversations about autism and broader discussions of how society can better understand and support individuals with neurodivergent conditions.
