Taking Your Next Step: A Social Group for Autistic Young People Aged 16-25

The move from school into college, work, or independent living can feel like a huge leap, and if you’re autistic, that leap can come with even more questions and challenges. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to do it alone. Welcome to Next Steps, a new social group for autistic young people aged 16 to 25, designed to support you as you transition into adulthood. Whether you’re figuring out what comes next, or just want a place where you can meet others and feel at ease, Next Steps is here for you.

What is Next Steps?

Next Steps is more than just a weekly group, it’s a space to connect, learn, and grow. Hosted in a friendly, relaxed setting at the I AM centre in Stretford, it’s a chance to be yourself, meet people your age, and start building the confidence and skills you need for life beyond school.

You don’t need to know exactly where you’re headed, just that you want a place where you’re supported while you figure it out.

“This isn’t about ticking boxes or telling people how to ‘be an adult,” says Colleen Dean, Group Coordinator.  “It’s about meeting young people where they are. We’re here to offer real-life tools and real friendships, without pressure or expectations. Whether someone comes to build confidence or just have a laugh with people who get them, there’s space for that here.”

What Happens at the Sessions?

We meet every Monday from 6-8 PM during term time (every-other Monday throughout Summer), and each session is a little different, but always welcoming and relaxed.

Some weeks, we focus on social activities and making friends. Other weeks, we invite guest speakers to chat about topics that are useful and relevant to real life.

We’ve already had engaging, easy going talks on:

  • Managing your money
  • Physical wellbeing and staying healthy

And we’re planning more practical, empowering sessions on:

  • Employment skills and job support
  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Navigating friendships and independence
  • Sexual health and relationships
  • Staying safe online

Don’t worry, this isn’t school. It’s about learning in a way that feels comfortable, supportive, and actually useful. You choose how you want to take part.

Why Join?

Because growing up is about more than “becoming an adult.” It’s about finding your community, understanding yourself, and learning how to navigate life your way.

At Next Steps, you’ll:

  • Make new friends in a safe, accepting space
  • Share experiences with people who understand
  • Learn things that help you in everyday life
  • Have fun in a way that’s comfortable for you

Parents and carers can feel confident knowing the group offers real learning and support, while young people will feel that it’s first and foremost a space to belong.
