Chester Zoo is a firm favourite with our members and they were excited to be back.
For anyone who works with animals, they will be very familiar with the observable positive and comforting effects being around animals as on people. Especially when you can get up close to them, like we did at Chester Zoo in Upton-by-Chester, Cheshire, with it’s amazing 35,000 animals across 128 acres of zoological gardens.
Our members found it a really calming and relaxing getting up close and personal with the amazing variety of stunning animals. They were fascinated by primates and in particular the chimpanzees with their grunts and grooming, and appreciated their playfulness, and their uncanny human characteristics.
The critically endangered red-haired orangutans were beautiful, intriguing and fascinating. They were incredibly agile considering they are the heaviest tree-dwelling animal on the plant. Similar to the chimpanzees, they had very strong social bonds between them, in particular the mother who was attentive to her baby.
The members were also in awe of the sheer size of the Asian elephants. They really made an impression with their playfulness and intelligence, their docile nature despite their obvious extraordinary strength. You could see the deep social bonds the elephants had for each other and their caring nature, in particular for their young.
The meerkats were very mischievous, fun-loving, curious, and really playful, we could have watched them all day.
One of the many highlights of the trip to Chester Zoo was the Lazy River Boat Trip from Sumba island. Meandering down the river, we got to listen the nature sounds of bird calls as they echoed throughout the tranquil and very relaxing tour.
